What To Expect in Therapy
“Allow yourself to see what you don’t allow yourself to see.” – Milton H.Erickson.
Getting started with therapy can be a daunting process with lots of information to consider. Creating a wholesome and trusting environment is the key to an effective therapy outcome and result. It is very important for you to first understand how it works and what to expect. I have put on some guidelines below with quick-link access to all the information you need. You can also read more about a specific concern or problem in my library of articles and resources.
Know Your Therapist
Finding the right therapist and therapy can be a very challenging experience as there are a lot of dynamic factors to be considered. Firstly, it is important to develop a strong relationship with someone you can trust and develop collaboration, which helps you challenge the difficulties you bring to the sessions in comfort and confidence. Without trust and rapport, it is almost impossible to tackle the challenges that therapy throws up.
It is important to review a therapist’s credibility, relevant experience and has sufficient training experience to get the right help in the area you require. It is important for a client to select a clinical hypnotherapist and psychologists who are accredited members of regulatory bodies since this guarantees a specific level of training, proficiency, and supervised practice. Accreditation by such bodies requires that psychologists follow specific guidelines in their work with clients which aims to protect them as best possible from poor clinical care or exploitation.
The next thing is to select a therapist that you feel good and comfortable working with. We all have our likes and dislike, as well as the personalities that we prefer. It is very important that you feel good and trust the therapist to be able to work through a long-term goal.
As part of the service, I work closely with a range of other professionals when required to ensure your specific needs are met. Wider collaborators may include other Psychologists who may have particular experience in the problem area, Psychiatrists in cases where medication is important, or Assistant Psychologists who can help support aspects of the work we do. Any potential work with collaborators would first be carefully discussed to ensure you consent and agree on the potential benefits.
I aim to provide a safe, welcoming but professional service with therapists who have real knowledge and experience working with the problems presented. In the case that you feel my knowledge, experience, therapeutic methods, or style of interacting are not a good fit for your difficulties, I will do my best to suggest other options and services which benefit you most.
Note : Coronavirus / COVID-19: The practice follows all current government guidelines and recommendations for hypnotherapists and psychologists. Ongoing face-to-face contact is managed at an appropriate distance while employing hygiene measures while online contact (e.g. via Zoom) is possible at any point of the treatment process depending on preference and/or necessity.
My Approach To Helping
Though encountering problems throughout one’s life is a perfectly normal occurrence, it can be incredibly taxing. My goal is to always quickly and effectively help my clients find a solution to overcome these debilitating conflicts.
I use evidence-based hypnotherapy and psychotherapy method to address your difficulties will be the best available for your situation based on research evidence and as recommended in treatment guidelines, primarily the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).
A key element in achieving this goal is the re-establishment of the clients’ relationship with their resources, abilities, and strengths. To change certain behaviors (such as addiction, compulsive and anxious behaviors) I apply techniques from Clinical Hypnotherapy with the combination of Cognitive-behavioral Psychotherapy and Interpersonal Neurobiology being my preferred approach. I will also use multidimensional natural healing modalities as supportive tools for the specific situation which can also make therapy fun yet interesting and less pressure

Specialist Assessment and Formulation
A key part of a Clinical Hypnotherapist and Psychologist’s role separate from therapy is assessment. While brief assessment also takes place at the beginning of therapy and helps guide intervention, the specialist assessment focuses instead on determining the presence or absence of various conditions such as dementia, brain injury, developmental disorders, or specific mental health diagnoses.
Specialist assessment is a complex process and may involve extended testing sessions and contact with other agencies. This including Neuropsychological Assessment, ADHD Assessment, Intelligence Testing (IQ), Mental Health Assessment, and more.
The formulation is key skill psychologists use to pull together all the information from the assessment to provide a psychological understanding of a person’s problems. This lets both the client and therapist understand what has gone wrong, what the causes are, what is keeping the problem going and what can be done to change the situation.
Developing the formulation is a collaborative process based upon the life experiences and current thoughts, feelings, and behavior patterns that the client describes. It is vital in outlining what can be done to help and is tailored carefully to each individual while also taking into consideration specific research on common psychological difficulties such as depression, anxiety, and trauma.
Intervention and Therapy Modalities
“Each person is a unique individual. Hence, psychotherapy should be formulated to meet the uniqueness of the individual’s needs, rather than tailoring the person to fit the Procrustean bed of a hypothetical theory of human behavior.” – Milton. H. Erickson, M.D.
My approach is to provide effective therapy by combining different modalities in hypnotherapy and psychotherapy such as :
- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
- AIM HI (Individualised Mental Health Intervention for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder)
- Bowen Family Systems
- Brain-spotting
- Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)
- Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM)
- Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
- Discernment Counselling
- Dream Analysis
- Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT)
- Expressive Arts Therapy
- Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)
- Family Therapy
- Group Psychotherapy
- Gestalt Therapy
- Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP)
- Intergenerational Family Systems Therapy
- MAP: Managing and Adapting Practice for Depression, Anxiety, and Disruptive Behaviour (children and adolescents)
- Milton H.Ericksonian Hypnosis
- Narrative Therapy
- Parenting Programme
- Play Therapy
- PREP Relationship Psycho-education
- Psychological First Aid
- Solution Focused Therapy
- Somatic Experiencing (adults/children)
Relapse Prevention and Booster Sessions
When therapy has been successful and the client and therapist feel confident that the process is coming to an end, it is important to integrate ‘relapse prevention’ work into the final sessions. This work aims to predict any future problems, what might act as personal triggers or stressors, how to spot signs of danger and what tactics to use to prevent things from getting worse again.
This aims to give you the best chance of managing problems as they arise with a clear approach to follow if things become tough again. This approach helps enable you to cope with stress independently and confidently, rather than having to rely on therapy as long-term support.
Of course, if things become too difficult or overwhelming then booster sessions can be arranged which support you in using the tactics that worked previously and adapting them if necessary to new challenges.
I will always recommend continuing education or practice on self-hypnosis can be a great way for relapse prevention and self booster actions. You may also refer to the online education on my website or attend my workshop for further training and self-development.

Health insurance reimbursement
I am an independent practitioner and not contracted to any specific health insurance provider. If you have health insurance, most insurance companies offer some level of coverage for mental health services. The percentage of which you are reimbursed depends on your policy and insurance provider and is therefore likely to range from 70% to 100%. Reimbursement amounts vary depending on a provider’s location. To give you an idea of what to expect, Medicare paid around $84 for a 45-minute psychotherapy session in 2015, according to APA Services.
Please check directly with your health insurance provider to determine the extent to which you will be reimbursed.
What information does the insurance company need from the Therapist?
Generally, to bill insurance companies for counseling, therapists need to submit an accurately completed claim form that includes the following information:
- The client’s demographic information
- The date the service was provided
- The insured party
- An International Classification of Diseases (ICD) code
- Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes
Most claims are sent electronically following a HIPAA-compliant, standardized format.
Behavioral health professionals must use the newest CPT codes to bill insurance companies for psychological tests. For example, a psychologist would use the code 96136 to bill for the first 30 minutes of test administration and scoring, and 96137 for each additional half-hour.
CPT codes for counseling include:
- 90832: 30 minutes of individual psychotherapy
- 90834: 45 minutes of individual psychotherapy
- 90837: 60 minutes of individual psychotherapy
For further information on these tariffs please contact your health insurance company.
Zoom, Skype, WeChat, and Email Contact
Seeing each other face to face gives a great opportunity to get to know one another well on a personal level and collaborate closely to solve problems. However, with hectic lives, travel plans, or family and work commitments, we appreciate that meeting face to face isn’t always possible.
We find Zoom, Skype, and WeChat video call useful methods in providing sessions in circumstances where it’s not possible to meet but a session would be beneficial.
While engaging in therapy, email contact which helps support you with any “homework” tasks or activities related to therapy between sessions may also be useful and can be discussed as part of the treatment plan following formulation.
Coronavirus / COVID-19: The practice follows all current government guidelines and recommendations for hypnotherapists and psychologists. Ongoing face-to-face contact is managed at an appropriate distance while employing hygiene measures while online contact (e.g. via Zoom) is possible at any point of the treatment process depending on preference and/or necessity.
